Phil Cashen

I am a retired high school principal from South Australia. I am interested in social history and, within this focus, the application of quantitative analysis.

Several years ago I started looking at the individual stories of two great-uncles of my wife. Both Patrick Sexton and Patrick Mills came from dairy farming families in the same part of Gippsland, and both were killed in WW1. Since then the research had expanded considerably and now covers all those men who enlisted in the AIF who had an association of some kind with the Shire of Alberton. The Shire of Alberton no longer exists - it was incorporated within the new Shire of Wellington in 1994 - but was, in fact, the original locus for local government and European settlement in Gippsland.
